THE STORY OF AFRICAN THISTLE

African Thistle was established in 2023 by Nicky and Daniel Kemp. After spending 18 years in the West Highlands of Scotland, Nicky (a Scot from Edinburgh) and Daniel (originally from Empangeni) decided to move to the picturesque town of St Lucia. Their goal was to immerse their two sons in their African roots while also keeping a piece of Scotland alive.

The name African Thistle reflects their heritage and commitment to providing exceptional African Thistle hospitality in South Africa. They aim to offer the best self catering accommodation options, including charming holiday apartments in St Lucia, ensuring that guests enjoy genuine Highland hospitality in a beautiful setting.

With a combined 50 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Nicky and Daniel are excited to launch their own business, creating unforgettable memories for all who stay with them!

Our apartment offers a home-from-home experience, nestled in a quiet area of St Lucia, surrounded by luscious trees, perfect for those seeking African Thistle hospitality. 

The African Thistle Apartments feature 2 bedrooms: one with a king-size bed and the other a triple room with a single bed and a bunk bed. 

The open-plan lounge and kitchen are fully equipped, ensuring your stay in our self-catering accommodation is comfortable. Enjoy free Wi-Fi throughout and Netflix for your entertainment. 

Additionally, there is a spacious shower big enough for two! 

Our facilities include a washing machine, iron with ironing board, large fridge freezer, microwave, oven and hob, kettle, cutlery, crockery, and all necessary kitchen utensils. 

Outside, in the secure complex, you’ll find private parking for one car, a large swimming pool with a lapa to relax, your own personal braai terrace, and a lovely tranquil patio garden.

Just 2km from the stunning beaches of St Lucia, you can fish to your heart's content. A short 3km away from the iSimangaliso game reserve, you'll have the chance to see 4 of the big 5 (excluding lion), or take a 40-minute drive through the reserve to reach the beautiful Cape Vidal, where you can snorkel and swim in the clear blue waters. 

Our holiday apartments in St Lucia are centrally located, placing you right in the heart of the town, close to all shops and restaurants, as well as the vibrant fruit and curio markets. 

At African Thistle, we can arrange various tours for you, including fishing charters, hippo and crocodile tours on the estuary, or if you're adventurous, join a game drive into the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Hlehlewe Umfolosi.
